Tai Chi - Silk Reeling Fundamentals for Beginners

Tai Chi - Silk Reeling Fundamentals

for Beginners

Easy to learn and guided instruction for single hand silk reeling. Silk reeling is paramount in Tai Chi, and is one of the main differences between QI Gong and Tai Chi.

In silk reeling, the movement is continuous. If one thing moves everything moves. All movement is directed from the center. This is also one of the core principles of tai chi. The center leads the body.

In silk reeling there is changing weight and turning. We change weight by moving our center either more to the left, or more to the right.
For beginners it is good to focus on breaking the movement into 4 parts. Shift weight right, change (hands position) , shift weight right, change (hand position).

The benefits of tai chi are increased relaxation, mindfulness, balance, increased energy, flow, softness, presence, harmony, and the continuous cultivation of internal power.

Tai Chi Chuan Sword Performance by Sifu Scott Jensen

Tai Chi Chuan Sword Performance

by Sifu Scott Jensen

Tai Chi Sword by Sifu Scott Jensen. This performance was part of our Fall show in October 2012. This is the Chen Pan Ling Tai Chi sword form. I modified the ending a bit to fit our space better.

This is a wonderful sword form, full of one classic sword pose after another, with interesting direction changes, and balance moves. This form is much more difficult than many standard Tai Chi forms, but not as difficult as the most difficult Wu Dang or Kung Fu sword routines. About 42 moves in length there are few repeated postures.

I learned this form from Chen Yun Ching of Taiwan. To read more about sword visit this page:

In December of 2020
UNESCO (The United Nations Education,
Science, and Culture Organization)
placed Tai Chi on its
“Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List.”

The purpose of this list is to
ensure better protection of important intangible cultural heritages worldwide and increase
 awareness of their significance.
