At AKKA we teach Tai Chi as a complement to our classical
Kenpo program. It is a great way to relieve stress,
relax the body and calm the mind.

This is the Yang 13 movement form
as originally taught by Mantak Chia.

Application: Single Whip

(Yangjia Michuan Taijiquan)

Here is a quick explanation of the application of the move Single Whip from the Michuan (or Hidden tradition) style of the Yang family Tai Chi. Single Whip is the signature move in TaiChi, but is rarely explained correctly. Some of the problems come from the split between the Hidden Tradition and the more public Yang style. Hopefully seeing this explanation will make this move less mysterious.

Yang Chengfu:

Comparisons of Four Disciples' Forms

From top left, clockwise: Fu Zhongwen, Dong Ying Jie, Zheng Manqing (Chen Man Ching), and Yang Zhenduo (son of Yang Chengfu and grandfather of Yang Jun).

Fu Zhongwen, prominent disciple of YCF, sets the pace here; all the others are slowed down or sped up to sync with his steps. Of course, CMC only had the short 37 form, so not all of his movements are here. Others shortened some parts of the form so occasionally these videos fade out momentarily.

( @tonbonthemon - Because there was apparently some confusion elsewhere, I want to just put it out there that originally, the performances here do not sync up so neatly. I have the adjusted the speed of each clip step-by-step with Fu as the reference point; all other clips are matched to his pace by identifying each of his foot steps, then splitting the others' performances (by foot step) and adjusting their speed such that the steps sync up. If you look closely, you may notice the speed/framerate changing in those other clips except for Fu's.)

This video is to show that whilst there are stylistic differences, you can see in the Cheng Man Ching form the impression of the same movements. The nature of each form does not allow for a simple side by side comparison but I’ll do my best. In the future I hope to be able to meet up and film with more Tai chi and Choi Li Fut stylists to share and compare notes and hopefully get more footage for interesting videos for you here.
