Tai Chi San Shou Styles Within the 4 Directions Tui Shou context - excerpt.

Bear in mind, this is not self defense as such, but practice of certain techniques and styles within our curriculum within the specific frame work of 4 Directions Pushing Hands. It is extremely important to understand how you end up in a contact position like we have in Tui Shou. Understanding range, striking and kicking abilities are vital.

With that said, there are advantages with training within this context as well. You are in constant movement at a relative close range wich gives you a rather narrow window of time where you can apply the proper technique. If too late or if countered this frame work gives you opportunities to practice the merging and transitions between different techniques and distances. It is also a basic range for working with leg trapping sweeping.

This is taken from the Patreon page where we go through all 48 traditional San Shou Styles both in striking kicking range, and within this Pushing hands context. The take away is - same movement - many uses.

Be well and keep the practice up!
